The members of the Kiwanis Club of Umatilla are your neighbor's...local business people...and others interested in Umatilla and its environs.  We volunteer and work on various projects through the year.  The best part is we have fun while contributing positively to our community!

Umatilla Kiwanis Club:

The Umatilla Kiwanis Club was organized in 1978 under the sponsorship of the Hermiston Kiwanis Club.  The Club is a wpe3.jpg (13279 bytes) member of Kiwanis International that has almost 300,000 members in over 8,000 local clubs in 79  nations.  Kiwanis International sponsors a number of youth organizations including junior high age Builders Clubs, high school Key Clubs and college Circle K Clubs with total membership of over 290,000 youth worldwide.  The motto of Kiwanis is “We Build” and the primary emphasis is “Young Children – Priority One” to supportFishing13.jpg (229311 bytes) youngsters from birth to 6 years old.

Meetings:  

The Umatilla Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday morning at 6 am at the Desert River Inn at 500 Willamette Avenue in Umatilla.  Visitors from other Kiwanis Clubs and community members are always welcome.

·         Help with Senior lunches every Friday

·         Cooking and help with Senior Center Breakfast on the third Saturday of each month

·         Sponsorship of Big Sky Basketball Tournament in mid February each year

·         Corn Booth at Umatilla County Fair each AugustFishing4.jpg (225422 bytes)

·         Annual Chili Cook-Off in January each year

·         Clean up of city streets and parks as needed

Past Projects and Activities:

     Umatilla Little League Field at Nugent Park in downtown Umatilla.  Built concession/storage building, dugouts, revamped sprinkler system and installed outfield fence, bleachers and flagpole.

     Basketball court on South Hill area – Put in asphalt basketball court, two baskets and fencing for youth in theFishing7.jpg (231388 bytes) area to use.

    Cemetery fence – Installed a 5-foot chain link fence around the cemetery and put up new sign.

     Kiwanis Park in McNary – In partnership with a Community Corrections work crew and community members, the Umatilla Kiwanis Club planned the park, installed an irrigation system and laid sod for a park that had been a weed patch at the entry to the McNary area.  The City of Umatilla then constructed a basketball court and installed playground equipment and an Eagle Scout installed a flag and sign.

     Median Strip on Columbia Avenue – The City of Umatilla put in curbing, sprinklers and grass on the islands on the street and the Umatilla Kiwanis Club planted 15 trees.

     Umatilla High School Football Field lights – Umatilla Kiwanis Club contributed $10,000 toward the total cost of $32,000 for lights for the Milt Durand Football Field Complex.

     McNary Heights Grade School play ground – Umatilla Kiwanis Club paid for about ½ of the cost of wooden play ground equipment and helped install the equipment with the assistance of the Umatilla Electric Coop.wpe3.jpg (57123 bytes)

     Scholarships – The Kiwanis Club has provided two to four scholarships each year to graduates of Umatilla High School as well as sponsoring youth to Meadowood Speech Camp, Kiwanis Law Enforcement Camp, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership and other youth leadership activities.

The Objects of Kiwanis International:

To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather that to material values of life.

To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.

To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.

To provide through Kiwanis Clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.
