Umatilla has excellent access to freight transportation facilities including two US highways, Hwy. 730 and Hwy. 395; two US Interstate highways, I-82 and I-84; daily Union Pacific Railroad rail service, as well as the Columbia River waterways for the most cost-effective mode of mass transportation to Portland, Pacific Rim and world-wide destinations. There are two commercial airports within 35 miles which provide for convenient air travel. Highway Connections:
Railroad: A Union Pacific Railroad line runs through Umatilla and the Port of Umatilla to provide daily access. Rail car loading facilities are available to and from Columbia River barges. Columbia River Barges: Barges put in at the Port of Umatilla facilities just above McNary Dam in Umatilla. The Port handles grain, frozen food products, compressed alfalfa, fuel, fertilizers and wood products. Products are shipped up-river to Lewiston, Idaho and down-river to the Port of Portland with shipment to destinations in Asia, the Middle East, and to the rest of the world. Airports: Commercial: Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, Washington and the Pendleton Airport are both located within 35 freeway miles. The Tri-Cities Airport (Richland, Pasco, Kennewick) is served by four air carriers through the airport in Pasco (PSC). Delta Air Lines flys jet aircraft from Salt Lake City, Utah (SLC). SkyWest flys turbo-prop aircraft from Salt Lake. Horizon Air and United Express fly prop and turbo-prop aircraft from Seattle, Washington (SEA) and Portland, Oregon (PDX). Horizon Air partners with Alaska Airlines and Northwest Airlines. United Express (operated by WestAir) is a partner with United Airlines. The Pendleton Airport is served by Horizon Air to connecting airports in the northwest. Municipal: Hermiston Municipal Airport is approximately 7 miles to the south.
